One of the ideas this week for the uni newspaper was the negative portrayal of Meghan Markle in the media. I saw this and pounced on it immediately like a menstruating woman in Cadbury’s World, only to realise that some other bitch has already claimed this article! But in light of the mention of such an inspiring woman, that didn’t stop me did it?
Meghan Markle, or Rachel, if (like me) you’re still watching Suits on repeat, is one of my key female role models. She’s strong, clever, beautiful and ridiculously talented when it comes to acting. Unfortunately, newspapers such as the Mail Online and Express don’t seem to get the fanny flutters like I do when her name comes up. My little blog is never gonna compensate for the disgusting hate she’s received, but she can take it as a little token of my love for her.
Let me give you a bit of context, in case you’re confused:
Just a coincidence maybe?
Ok, maybe not a coincidence. Just send me an email and I will happily provide with you about 30 more of these bullshit articles just from 2019 alone. I mean, AVOCADOS come on, they are the second love of my life after Meghan Markle herself!! It’s frustrating that this crap isn’t illegal – but it’s the subtlety that the media carefully craft that allows them to get away with it. Let me tell you what avocados are really linked to – toast, happiness, and brunch. So why the dramatic difference in representations? Because she’s mixed race. She’s been divorced before. She’s infecting the royal family with non-whiteness. The world is gonna end!!
This woman gave up her success, her passion, for the man she loves – but her loyalty was thrown right back in her face. I don’t know about you, but I think I’d just be a pussy and let it happen. But this is Meghan Markle here – she don’t take no shit. Her and Harry stepping back as senior members of the royal family was them sticking a middle finger up to the media. What an inspiration.
If you’re still not convinced that Rachel, sorry Meghan, is not the only woman you need in your life, well firstly, you’re probably a right old wanker, but also, I’m not done yet. Not only is she an amazing actress, but she is a huge icon in the feminism movement. She’s delivered numerous speeches on gender equality, educating 13-year-old me on how we still have a long way to go in other parts of the world, what feminism is really all about, and encouraging me to use google for educational purposes for the first time, rather than googling ‘watch suits online free’.
When she was just 11 years old, she wrote to a company, demanding they change their sexist advert for washing up liquid. It said, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.” Of course, she wasn’t happy with this, and got it changed to ‘people all over America’. She’s been turning sexism around since she was just a kid. When I was 11, I struggled to just insert a tampon, let alone be able to think critically enough to not only identify sexism, but also actually construct a letter to change this.
Anyway, next time you see a negative article written about Meghan, remember that the writer is probably a racist twat. Next time you’re in a shit situation, keep your head up and Meghan Markle it like a boss. And next time you settle down for a Netflix and Chill sesh, start with Suits – it should only take you about 103 hours to finish the 9 seasons.
